Pope Francis on Super Bowl:  The Pope gave a message prior to the Super Bowl in which he stressed the importance of ” Sports “. He said something to the effect that sport provides an avenue to bridge differences, build teamwork, and bring out the best in the human spirit. He did not predict the winner, or say who he wanted to win. Given the “miracle win ” by the Patriots….. there can be little doubt who the Pope rooted for.

St. Joseph Cathedral, San Diego: I attended Mass this morning at St. Josheph’s in San Diego. The church is very beautiful and the music and message were inspirational. The pastor gave a short message on giving to the poor. His name is iconic….Father Patrick J. Mulcahy. No, he was not on MASH but he is definitely a “doer” . He recently donated his kidney to a person in need.

Rosary Cathedral, Toledo Ohio: This is one of the most famous churches in North America. The Cathedral was modeled after a historical Cathedral in it’s sister city of Toledo, Spain. The cathedral has a basilica floor plan and reflects famous European cathedrals of the medieval model. Wikipedia has a thorough background from construction, which was completed in 1931 during the height of the depression, to the most recent restoration. The artwork on the ceiling is like that of the Sistine Chapel. You walk the marble floors and your footsteps echo. It is a magnificent feeling to be in this cathedral. There is no better place to quiet ones heart in mediation and prayer. My mother and father were married in this cathedral in 1945.

In Everything Give Thanks: This theme is present throughout the Scriptures. There is no more clear passage than in the book of I Thessalonians where the Apostle Paul writes in verses 6-10. Paul is writing to the church at Thessalonica about the importance of spiritual growth and trusting God in all things. He does not say we should be ” thankful for all things” but says “in everything give thanks…for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”.

The early church in Thessalonica was under great persecution and tribulation. The Apostle Paul was writing to remind them, to encourage them, that in all things God is in control. All human beings have trials and tribulations of various sorts, some rather annoying, some very challenging and life defining. When we give thanks to God we are not saying we are joyous in the pain, but rather we are leaning on the Lord for strength and peace to get through to the finish. We must remember that God is always there with us and the key is to trust in Him to carry us through.

Proverb of the Day: Prov. 12:25 “Anxiety in the heart of man weighs it down, but a good word is makes it glad”.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 92:1 “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Thy name, Oh Most High”.

SEVEN BRIDGES: For those who want to exercise without mindlessly doing so there is the Seven Bridges Walk in San Diego. Just google the ” Seven Bridges Walk San Diego ” for directions to this pleasant 5.5 mile outing.

TWENTY SMILES: No one smiles much anymore. Be honest about it, you don’t either. Whenever we meet one of those “natural smilers” we always come away feeling good. What is a natural smiler you ask? A natural smiler is a person gifted with, and they might say cursed with, the inability to do anything but smile. They get scolded by their parent, spouse, teacher, or boss and they smile…a nervous reaction that is as uncontrollable as breathing for them.  A twitch that gives them inner angst and causes them to be momentarily misunderstood.  Sorry to say, for the rest of us, smiling is something we mostly do not do.

Truth be told smiling is good for our health, and the health of others. Try smiling at 20 people today. Give them a big smile as you order your hamburger, pay your toll, or greet your work colleagues. After a week of giving 20 smiles out a day you can up it to thirty, then forty, and who knows…you might just become a “natural smiler” spreading joy to everyone you meet throughout the day. What a great way to live!

THAT…I THINK I REALLY SCREWED UP FEELING:  We have all been there. We make a decision and before too long we get an overwhelming feeling that screams at us…”you blew it, you messed up big, you idiot”…and so on. Generally when we get these post decision feelings we ignore them. When the feelings get stronger we try pushing them way to the back of our consciousness. This only works for a short time. If we are lucky we listen to the inner warnings in time and adjust as needed…. and if not so lucky, we suffer the consequences.

I believe Dean Spanos, the owner of the San Diego Chargers, is having these feelings right now. They are screaming at him….”Dean you are a dummy….the rights to develop 300 plus acres at a $1.00 a year?…you idiot”!  His decision to move the Chargers North to Los Angeles was, lets be kind….plain stupid.  He has a brief window of time where he can reverse this disastrous move, with the help of his NFL owner peers, but I kind of think he is shoving the voices way down…sorry for him………we have all been there.

IT’S OFFICIAL:  The San Diego Chargers are moving to Los Angeles. They will be second fiddle to the Rams. My guess is Dean Spanos will stay in LA three to five years and then sell the team…. at about 50 times the profit amount he would have gotten had he stayed in San Diego. I applaud our citizens for being so forward thinking and rejecting the underwriting of the multi-billion dollar NFL. We will be followed by more cities that will say “adios”. Our citizens can take that hotel increase and use it on our infrastructure to improve the quality of our city for our children and future generations. We do not need a downtown stadium. Frankly, I am glad to know Colin Kapernick will not be kneeling down here next year to disrespect our country and the brave men and women who serve in uniform, to include our police.

TRUMPS FIRST PRESS CONFERENCE:  Humorous, informative, hopeful, and mostly he reminded the Press, and the rests of us, that he is still Trump. No political savvy, bull dung, or politeness.  CNN, along with Buzz Feed, and other networks, spent the rest of the day trying to defend their new bench mark….are they fake news and if accused how do they shake the label?…gotta laugh….  Good luck CNN….the regular people on the street are watching less and less and less. Clergy, Police, Press….these three need to be credible and have good reputations. CNN you are in trouble.

PLANNING THE ENDEAVOR TRIP TO CUBA: I hope to leave November 1st. More details will follow as plans develop. Sitting on Endeavor at Harbor Isle Marina in San Diego.

DISINFORMATION: The US Military, along with our CIA and other defense agencies, use psychological warfare all the time. The term for one type of action is “Disinformation”. Disinformation is closely related to “Propaganda”. One way this is used is by spreading fake, or false, information through media and other sources in order to confuse the enemy and disrupt their support. The whole fake news stuff that has recently come out is not new. The News Networks have long been in bed with the government.  The whole beltway elite ruling class has just been found out by the common guy on the street. Currently all that is being put out in the media; the Putin hacking stuff, the Trump compromise leaks, and the rest, have been reported and disseminated for one reason, and one reason only…to confuse the people. Their technique is the use of “disinformation”. The cover being created is for the Clintons and Obama. The problem they are having is that Trump is calling them out publically as he did today in his press conference and the common guy on the street is finally seeing the truth. The light is now shined on these guys. Bad things are likely coming from all of this. President Trump gets it, does not like it, and will fight it. I just hope he can garner some support from those who have power and still a seed or two of morality. He cannot win this alone….more to come.

PRAY EVERY DAY: Remember to start and end each day in prayer.  Five areas of prayer; Praise, Thanksgiving, Repentance, Supplication, and Intercession.

Good Morning America:

It is a cloudy morning here in, “America’s Finest City”, San Diego. I need to wear a sweater to walk the dog today and it looks like we might even get a drizzle out of these clouds.  The forecast calls for a 50% chance we might have to use our wipers when driving, but only on intermittent. A drizzle for us is like a full day of rain for you folks living East of the Mississippi. We take what we can get.

Thomas Alva Edison was an optimist. He never focused on his failures, just reaching new discoveries.  We all need to take a lesson from the inventor of the light bulb. Thomas failed every day, yet he kept researching, trying new things, and never even had the concept of ”I give up” in his makeup.  His response to being reminded of his failures; “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work”.

The only way we can make progress is by experimenting. Our daily lives each begin with unknowns, big and small, about to be discovered. We must not let our past failures limit our daily walk today.  Be like Thomas Edison…move forward, knowing your life is not defined by your misses, but rather by your hits.

Keep Swinging!

Don't Quit

A few days each week I take my golden retriever Augustina with me to RB Donuts. I leave her in the car while I go in and get my breakfast. I usually buy a large coffee black, and a glazed twist donut.  I go back to the car and pull around the back of the center and park near the US Post Office where there is a large open grassy area. This is Augustina’s favorite place to do her morning business. There is rich, well watered, green grass, a great tree, and several dense bushes.

Augustina is 12 years old and I drive a Ford Escape. She uses a portable step that we bought at Petco to get up and down from the back seat.  She loves going down but is always analyzing her climb up the two steps on the way into the car.  I think she is worried about missing a step and doing a tumble, which has happened a time or two. If you have an older dog I highly recommend the Petco doggie step.

So anyway about a week ago I was leaning against my car sipping my coffee and watching Augustina do a thorough sniff of the area, seeking the absolute perfect spot to do the drop.  As I glanced down the road which runs behind all the stores I saw this very old looking man coming our way with a walker.  He was taking what I could see were less than full steps, almost baby steps. Half step…lean….roll….half step…lean…roll…you get the idea. He was not getting to us soon and I knew Augustina would be well finished before he got up to the grassy area. Not that I was worried about Augustina, she loves everyone, especially the old, infirmed, deformed, ugly,….she never sees it. She loves people who pass her nose evaluation.  She can sense a good person, a not so good person, and really bad person. I have seen her bark her tail off, most aggressively, at someone who on the surface seems harmless, and conversely  watched her wag and lick people you or I might not want to shake hands with…. but she knows….she knows…. and I trust her too.

So this particular day Augustina is taking her sweet time. It was a beautiful early morning and I forgot about the old guy in the walker. I was looking up at the birds, daydreaming maybe thinking about flying or sailing …just enjoying the morning.  Well, she finally does her business and I do my duty too by picking it up in the doggy bag.  As I turn around to call Augustina to the car I look up and the old guy in the walker is pausing right at our bumper. He was looking at the dog and gave me a warm smile.

I walked over and noticed he was about six feet, maybe six feet one. He stood tall and straight and was taking some slow breaths. Not knowing what to say I gave him my usual comment on what a great invention the walker is. I do think we overlook some of the greatest inventions. I used a walker for a time when my back was completely out. It allowed me to move about the house and the back yard in a way that was almost effortless. It also had a fold down seat, and hand brakes in case you got into an out of control driveway crash situation….sure glad that never happened.

Anyway I finished my walker story and we shook hands and introduced each other.  His handshake was firm and strong. I knew right then he had been an athlete so I said  ” I know you are an athlete but I am wondering what is your sport?” .  He beamed and smiled broadly, and then began to tell me his story.

He had grown up in Queens New York where he met and married his wife. He joined the fire department in New York City.  He said a few years before he retired he and his wife traveled on vacation to San Diego.  After the first day they knew this was the finest place on earth to live and they vowed they would move here when he finally retired. He rose to rank of Battalion Commander in the Fire Department but said as soon as he was eligible to retire he did so.  They kept their vow and moved to Poway, where they lived until his wife passed a few years ago.

Allan told me his sport was cycling. He said he would do sixty plus miles a day about five days a week, as well as longer rides and competitions.  He entered and competed in many long distance races and won awards for his age group many times.  He told me he would still be riding today but when he was 88 years old he had a serious crash and suffered a concussion which left him with permanent vertigo….hence the need for the walker. He went on to explain that when he crashed he had logged 195,000 miles cycling all over the United States and in other countries. He said his goal was to reach 200,000 miles and then retire from cycling. At 88 years old this dedicated and competitive athlete’s career was ended by an awful crash that left him seriously handicapped.

Allan went on to tell me he had been sure he was going to make 200,000 miles prior to the crash. He said it was hard to accept not getting over the concussion but now he does miles with his walker. The retirement home where he lives is at the other end of the shopping center and he walks the back road, behind the stores, every day. He then said he had to get going and told me he logged his miles after every walk….I did not ask how many miles he had in the walker but next time we meet I will do so.

Allen is an example of what it means to be an athlete.  He is the living picture of the saying “once an athlete always an athlete”.  When most people think of an athlete they immediately see…. NFL, MBL, or NBA stars.  These are athletes to be sure but an athlete is also someone who is doing his or her sport and always striving to improve and win.  Athletes compete against others, but most of the time they are competing against themselves. An athlete is driven, competitive, committed, disciplined, and usually in outstanding physical shape.  When I hear the word athlete I think of our military people, our police and fire personnel, and all those gym rats dedicating themselves to their sport and workouts each and every day all across America.

To all you fellow athletes out there I say “keep in the game….it matters”!  And remember Allan if you find yourself unable to do your game….there is always another way…. to get better, to compete, and to win.

RB Donut Shop….. by, Michael Hawke

I get up three days out of seven and head for RB Donuts….OK, four to five days out of seven. The RB in the name stands for Rancho Bernardo, which is the community where I live. RB donuts is run by a Cambodian couple, David and Jennifer. I do not know their last name even though I have frequented their donut shop for several years.  I have a typical relationship with this couple that I think most Americans have with the shop and store keepers they see and do business with several times a week. We get to know these folks superficially, yet there is a familiarity that makes the relationships seem deeper, maybe even a little bit like extended family. Conversations usually never cover serious matters yet there is a recognition and a mutual respect that feels good. There is a special comfort and stability that comes from these kinds of connections and seeing these people in our daily lives. I feel this way about David and Jennifer and always enjoy my trip to their shop for my donut and coffee.

The Cambodian Genocide occurred in Cambodia from 1975-1979. During this time nearly 2 million Cambodians were brutally killed by the Khmer Rouge communist government. When David and Jennifer were young teens they lived in a village in Cambodia.  One day the evil Khmer Rouge entered their village, routed everyone to a steep mountainside bordering Thailand, and ordered them to jump. The shooting began as the villagers scrambled to get away. Many died from being shot, or from their perilous falls, or both. These two kids, from different families, survived. Their parents and the rest of their families died. I do not know the details of their trek but they ended up in America, and eventually in San Diego, after a long journey through the political refugee system of the day.  They fell in love somewhere along their way and eventually married and had children. They have three grown children who have all graduated from University of California schools.

I feel a special connection to David and Jennifer knowing their background and how hard they have worked each and every day of their lives.  David says jokingly his donuts are “fat free”.  To me his donuts symbolize what is great about America. These two young people came here seeking safety, freedom, work, and community. They built a life and raised a family through hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. Their three children have excelled academically in the best, most competitive, schools in America. These three, “first generation”, Americans are hard working, respectful, and smart.

Next time you are eating a donut think about David and Jennifer, two very humble, hard working, Americans. Better yet, if you come to San Diego, you can find RB Donuts in Rancho Bernardo, just up the 15 from downtown. Your journey there will reward you with the best donut you every ate…. yes better than Dunkin, better than Winchells, and even better than Krispy Cream.

But once you get there you will be taken way beyond the delicious donut….you will touch and feel the living presence of the American Dream, and you will know why so many millions of people from all over the world want desperately to come to America. Like David and Jennifer they are seeking safety, freedom, work, and community.

Lest you make a leap from this story and think I support we open our doors to the Middle East refugees, or to all who seek to come, you would be wrong. Refugees today need to go through a thorough vetting process. The refugees from Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Libya, and elsewhere in the region, who have migrated into Europe have a clear track record of not assimilating, but rather isolating with their goal to  bring Sharia to their new homelands.  For Europe this has been devastating. The book, “While Europe Slept” predicted the destruction we see today which resulted from a “wide open door” immigration policy.  We need to follow our immigration laws and we need to embrace immigrants and refugees who will become Americans first, just like David and Jennifer are.

  1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
  2. You cannot help small people by tearing down big people.
  3. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
  4. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
  5. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
  6. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
  7. You cannot foster the brotherhood of and sisterhood of men and women by inciting class hatred.
  8. You cannot become financially secure on borrowed money.
  9. You cannot build character and courage by taking away a person’s initiative and independence.
  10. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could do for themselves.

DON’T QUIT

  • When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
  • When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
  • When the funds run low and the debts are high,
  • And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
  • When care is pressing you down a bit,
  • Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
  • Life is strange with it’s twists and turns,
  • As everyone of us sometimes learns,
  • And many a failure turns about
  • When he might have won had he stuck it out;
  • Don’t give up though the pace seems slow-
  • You may succeed with another blow.
  • Success is failure turned inside out-
  • The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
  • And you never can tell just how close you are,
  • It may be near when it seems so far;
  • So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit-
  • It’s when things seem worst…that you must not quit.

Golf

I watched the Masters final round this past Sunday and it was both entertaining and inspirational. Jordan Spieth showed so much class. It is easy to be classy when you are winning, or crowned the victor, much harder when you are in the midst of blowing it and everything is falling apart. Even worse though is blowing it while everyone in America could be watching your total choke.

Jordon was on the back 9 with a three shot lead. All he had to do was maintain pars, and maybe one birdie at best. He had the Masters in his hand, his to lose. Well unfortunately golf is a really hard game. He shot a 7 on a par 3, basically coming unglued, and he lost the Masters as a result. He did not just lose it though, he lost being a back to back winner. Since he won the Masters last year tradition requires that he put the green jacket on the winner, in this case, Englishman Danny Willett. With the heartbreak, and I am sure embarrassment, engulfing him, he held it in and was a gracious loser. He even seemed genuinely happy for Willett’s special moment.

We do not teach young people how to lose graciously. In fact today there is an aversion to even teaching kids about winning and losing. The fear is we could harm their developing self esteem. I am pretty sure Jordan Spieth’s parents taught him how to win and how to lose. There is no shame in losing, or failing, only in not trying. Jordan Spieth is still hurting from this loss but I would put money on the fact he is out there getting ready for the next tournament. For in life, just as in golf, the only shot that matters….is the next one. Mk

Make Hay

I am a believer in jumping in on important tasks or endeavors as soon as possible. I believe this has created in me a certain impatience toward those who are more reticent, or reflective, about starting new challenges. I am confident it is better to make careful analysis before jumping forward, especially with bigger things like school, jobs, moves, and of course spouses. However, being of the age now where I have a lot of look back on years, and probably far less look forward years, it is clear to me that it is better to jump in the lake than to sit on the shore wondering if there could be a snake, alligator, or a crazy scuba diver down there just waiting to get me.

What am I saying? To young people I urge you to think big and do not fear making big decisions. Failure, or a wrong choice, should not be something to fear. The thing to fear is indecisiveness which leads to paralysis which leads to indecisiveness….and it becomes a life long circle. I can tell you I have made a lot of mistakes….no, a huge amount of mistakes. But I can also say I have had more successes, done more things, traveled to more places, and had more fun than I could have dreamed when I was younger. I leave you with these thoughts;

1. Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed no hope at all…. Dale Carnegie
2. I know the price of success: hard work, dedication, and an unremitting devotion to the things you want to see happen…. Frank Loyd Wright
3. Nothing is more freeing than the force of duty: duty to self,to family,to church,to God,to work,to Country…Duty Frees the Soul…. Mk
4. When you are at the plate, with the bat in your hand and a full count, and the pitch comes in you can only do one thing….swing at the ball…. Mk

Get out there and swing at those pitches…you will have a blast….and you know what? You will hit more balls than you could have thought and will even send some  over the fences! Mk
