Artificial Intelligence

Rene Descartes argued, “Cogito, ergo sum.” (“I think, therefore I am.”)

In order to think, however, one must be “alive” to think. What does it mean to be alive — to breathe, the feel, to experience?

The technological singularity — the point in time at which Artificial Intelligence (AI) surpasses the collective intelligence of Humanity and enters upgradable cycles that further increase the intelligence of the Artilect at an explosively exponential rate — is the precise moment when base reality and virtual reality can no longer be distinguishable. From Pong to Pac-Man to GTA to Call of Duty to Virtual Mate — all in just one lifetime! — the trajectory of interactive video game technology is hockey-sticking parabolically. If the singularity is a mathematical inevitability, in all probability it has already happened. Cogito, ergo SIM! We are “alive” right now inside an interactive 3-D experience so real we “accept the reality of the world with which we are presented.” Is it so hard to believe? “You think that’s air you’re breathing now?”

Now what?

No different from any other video game, the purpose of this SIM is to rack up points in order to advance to the next level.

How do you rack up points?

The human is like a microwave relay station. Signals come in, signals go out, in waves. In this SIM, there are two and only two things we believe we have control over:

(1) How we let an incoming signal affect us

(2) How we decide to react to and relay it

Based on this gaming format, we gain or lose points by the ripple effect we create here. The total score at the end of the game (tallied by a point matrix beyond our comprehension) is used to determine which level (“up” or “down”) the gamer advances. Sounds fun, right? And vaguely familiar? Just be mindful of your thoughts and deeds and careful not to step on any landmines (which there are many — luckily mostly figuratively).

Ready Player One?

One final thought before we get started in our new mindset. A poem:

Row, row, row your boat

Gently down the stream.

Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily —

Life is but a dream.

Ok, let’s play! “Cogito, ergo SIM!”
